We admire her transience,

her fragility –

express wonder at the way her tears

enhance her beauty –

but shun our own.

Ambivalence

Jan Lake Rainstorm2

Curious, this inner clash

Where dark and light reside.

Storm and calm, hurt and balm

Irresolute inside.

Settled chaos, doubt’s resolve,

Sinner’s brawl with saint;

Weak and strong in tuneless song,

Liberty’s restraint.

Of Words and Water

Jan Lake duck2

Freedom forms feathers –

Rows and rows standing at attention,

Roman Legionnaires linked with their brothers,

Trained to repel any onslaught;

For,

Knowing my true worth,

Your words

Drip,

Bead,

Drop,

Puddle around me.

And I, like the duck,

Am not wet.

What the Sundial Said

HDR sundial

Why wait for Summer

While the seconds tick away?

Inhale this moment,

Teach your lungs to breathe Today.

‘Now’ is something fragile,

A gift that never lasts;

Every second precious,

For soon it’s called the Past.

Phase

evening moom

In viewing me, you cannot see the sum of all my parts;

Your eyes can only scan my skin, they can’t discern my heart.

For as the moon in mystery is shrouded from our gaze,

What we observe in others is but one nocturnal phase.

Keep this in mind if others show a less than stellar frame –

Character is more than what one action can proclaim.

As Mistress Moon evolves each night, her beauty ebbs and wanes,

We cannot judge our neighbour’s heart by what his face contains.

Thoughts Are Clouds

summer sky

Thoughts are clouds on canvas sky –

Some go idly drifting by,

Moved by whim or circumstance,

Shaped as concepts meet by chance.

Others draw conclusions there,

Intention giving studied air –

Captured by the artist’s mind,

Reflection paints each view refined.

Lest your work of art be marred

By thunder-heads, be on your guard;

Better than the stormy strokes

Are lovely thoughts that hope evokes.

The Mark

broken

Scarred.

Withered,

defective,

broken, battered –

but boldly blooming.

Consider each fracture

proof you are alive;

count each blossom

audacious

beauty

mark.
