We are gathered here today
to remember Spring –
not as she was in her final days, but in her prime;
robust. Green. Alive.
As you all know,
she hasn’t been herself for quite some time now.
May the memories we have
of better, happier,
warmer days with her
be our joy and consolation.
She will live on in our hearts,
and in our vacations
taken in far away, sunnier places.
Please console each other as best you can,
for our grief over her passing so soon
is a difficult burden to bear.
Good-bye, Spring, good-bye.
Memorial donations may be made
out to Melody Lowes,
her long-time friend.
Melody plans to build an arboretum in Spring’s honour
in which to grow
the lettuce and spinach she craves this time of year.

I hope you have published this announcement in the newspaper. By the way, have you had the longest winter or the coldest winter or the latest spring in a hundred years or any of those record breakers? Winter fuel bills must be enormous.
I know that it has been record-breaking in some ways but records haven’t always been accurately kept in different areas so it is hard to say with certainty that this or that record has been broken. It is definitely one of the longest for consecutive days of snow on the ground – and this month has been record-breaking for so few days above freeing temps. Brrr…
Too brrrrrr……for comfort.
Today it actually got above zero – and it felt so heavenly! Perhaps Spring will resurrect herself, after all! 🙂

The weather’s getting to you. I can tell.
As to Gallivanta’s question, it feels like the latest spring in 100 years, but it may not be. It is late; we are far below our seasonal average and so much snow this past month — with more predicted for tomorrow.
Then to make it feel worse, the Weather forecasters keep telling us “the next four days will be cool, but five days from now it’s going to hit 7 or 8 C. Each day the forecast is revised and our 7 or 8 C slowly recedes while we get -1 or 0.
Correct me if I’m wrong, Melody, but I think +3 is our highest temp so far this month; it’s -10 at 7am this morning.
I think you’re right – as for record-breaking, that is hard to tell. I know that some records weren’t accurately kept consistently enough in specific areas (amounts of snow for example) to be able to say with certainty whether this year breaks a certain record or not. I do know that April has been chillier than the average – going back how far in time, I can’t say because I don’t have that info. I have quit listening to the forecast. I did, however, buy my garden seeds. Act of faith?? 🙂
I just wandered back to check my garden; it’s still under 2-3 feet of solid-packed snow, so I’m leaving the seeds at the store for the present. 🙂
So what’s your guess when the snow will be gone in all the unshaded areas?
Wow. Well into May is my guess. There are still 6-foot solid-packed drifts along treelines. ‘Twill be very interesting to see what happens…

I noticed it was snowing this evening when I came home from work. Almost imperceptibly, as if winter were trying to sneak back again while folks were having supper.
HA! What a great way to describe it. It’s like a cosmic and epic battle on the big screen. “Will the good guys win?? Tune in for more…” 🙂
Arrgghh. Thank God I wasn’t up there during the recent visitation of despair–I’d have jumped into the nearest icy waters. You need some electric hibiscus lights like I have–and some fresh pineapple, no matter what the cost.
🙂 Fresh pineapple will do the trick! I bought myself the brightest geranium money can buy for my kitchen table, just to add some colour!
I was going to buy hyacinths and roses on last week’s “$5 Friday” special–but since I hadn’t shopped in 2 weeks, I bought food. If it ever quits raining, I’ll get those flowers, you betcha!!
