road less taken

I stopped today beside the road

that I had never taken;

I gazed along those verdant slopes

at what I had forsaken.

My broken spots pulled hard toward

‘what ifs’ and ‘might have beens’ –

My heart was caught and hung upon

the fence where doubt begins.

I cannot walk along that path,

my choices barred its entry;

I’ll never know its final trail,

so Grace will be its sentry.

    Oh Wow, oh wow–wow-wonderful.

Yippeee!!! 😉 Are we a wee bit able to relate to the whole ‘regrets covered by grace’ theme??

      1. Fig Tree Chance

        Yes Ma’am, indeed-y!!

  2. Lyle Krahn

    That’s a great sentry.

Isn’t it?? I’m not always able to find such a good sentry, but I’m making progress. I think this, too, takes practice…. Thanks, Lyle.

    “The road taken–anywhere there’s a new blog I can rent” 🙂

HA! Now, there’s a poem in the making! 😉

Go for it, Mel! How ya holdin’ up with school?

      2. melodylowes

Okay! It sure is a lot of work. But – I get to watch kids as they begin to READ! What a joy that is in my life…

      3. Ponder

Oh wowza, I can’t think of much that would be better–thrilling to open new worlds on pages of a book, and walk on in! So are the kids like, age 6?

      4. melodylowes

Yep. The adventures flow thick with 6-year-olds, let me tell you! 🙂

      5. Ponder

Sounds like wonderful fun to me! I’m guessing they say anything and everything.

Let’s just say it’s a good thing I have a poor memory – ah, the secrets I’m privy to! 🙂

        Ha ha ha

  4. Noelene

Love that last line “so Grace will be its sentry” – a very liberating way to let regrets go! Thank you for sharing.

Thanks, Noelene! I like what you saw in this piece. I s’pose we all have regrets – I can’t say that I always allow grace to be the sentry, but I’m working on it!

  5. Sissym

I can understand what you said because I also have this feeling “my choices barred its entry; I’ll never know its final trail,”

    cheers

    1. melodylowes

Sometimes we weren’t meant to take that trail. Sometimes we were. It’s good to remember that we made the best choice we could at the time! Thanks, Sissy!

  6. Debbie

My Melody, this was so well done and the message so perfect for us! Thank you bunches!

You are such a ray of cyber-sunshine, you know that? Thanks to YOU. 🙂

  7. Shelli Carlisle

Broken spots. Love this. Very relatable

    1. melodylowes

Thanks Shelli! I’m learning that we all have ‘broken spots’. It’s what we DO with them that sets the course of our futures, isn’t it? Enjoy your weekend!

I love this. I have been trying for months to write my own “Road Not Taken” poem and I am having difficulty getting it just right.

Sometimes the words just don’t want to order themselves! Maybe you need to just let it sit for a while longer. If I write under pressure things don’t seem to go very well…. Happy New Year!!
