Where the Sun Don’t Shine

Stella D'Oro gold

Stiff upper lip and thick skin

blocked some of the blows, sure. But

they also blocked something she

needed more than oxygen,

more profoundly than safety,

more urgently than bars.

.

And now that she’s finally

transparent, those places where

her heart is the thinnest let

by far the most sunlight through.

A Peel Like Yours

peonyshadow.jpg

A peel like yours

leaves nothing to the

imagination. It reveals

your soul-shape,

what you wear

under your game face

on market day. My

heart sees underneath,

to the freshly squeezed

fruit, the way you

drip with flavour

and leach nutrition

and satisfy my

thirst for

transparency.

Healing Stars

The niches where life’s cruel claws

have scratched and torn through surface skin

draw blood from veins, where pain leaks through,

and trace the places you have been.

A surface coat of ‘happy paint’

can’t cover up your precious scars –

in sharing yours with all of us,

your wounds can shine like healing stars.

Veins

Your x-ray vision uncovers my veins,

The places where the bleeding remains;

My secrets are naked, open to view,

Transparency letting  sunlight through

As closets are emptied and cupboards groomed.

Without all the garbage, there might be room

To unpack myself, grow into my veins,

Discover, exhume my soul’s dead remains.
