Spring stirs in her sleep,
stretches,
tentative tautness, this seeping skin,
this catch in the throat
too afraid to name hope
as predecessor;
life labours in a womb
swollen with the earth’s
heartbeat and
fed by soil’s
placenta. She croons in her dreams,
low mourning dove cries wrenched
from a heart full, overflowing
its banks; her sighs are the
wind in the pussy-willows,
her song the cry of geese on
the wing.
This one’s exquisitely beautiful–I love “croons in her dreams”, and pussy willows are my fave! It is all beautiful imagery, softly flowing, quiet lyricism. Great!
Thanks! So now you’re hyphenated? Out of the Caddo closet, then, are we? 🙂
TOTALLY–you’ll see soon; the “coming events” begin Sunday (warning: don’t read Caddo’s 7-Word Sunday with food in your mouth–I won’t be responsible for choking issues). Thanks for hangin’ in there with/for me!! I need to work on my “blogroll”–which I’m thinkin’ I’ll call “Family and Friends”.
What a bout beverages? Do you have insurance for those? 😀
No, it’s too expensive–so I’m just trying to remember to put the warning tags up (Deb says I never alert her in my emails, and she ends up spitting popcorn at the computer screen).
We could take up a Caddo-collection for screen wipes, perhaps?? Pass them out at opportune moments?
Screen wipes! What are they? Mine gets dusted about once a month–and it’s so reassuring to discover I’m not really going blind after all… The TV is worse–it’s old, not a flat-screen–so everyone looks like they’re wearing lace shawls, and going grey.
I can almost feel spring trying to break through that!
She’s just hitting the snooze button – once she wakes up for real, we’re on! 🙂
“fed by soil’s placenta”…now that’s what I’m talkin’ about right there!
🙂 Inspired by a post on midwifery on facebook… *sheepish grin*
Cool. Why not?!
Beautiful. If only I could say the same for the sleeping spring that won’t wake up!
It sure is a late one in many parts of the world this year! Spring is so encouraging that it leaves a bit of a bitter taste to have winter drag on so long. A cosmic lesson on patience???? 🙂
Wow .. what imagery, Melody .. and that photo matches what you wrote so well! Perfecto!
She is stirring indeed – what a joy to see the bare earth again, after so long…
This poem is so beautiful, Melody! Your picture reminds me of jumping on iced puddles as a child… risky when you’re not sure how deep it is. Oh the memories – I have a boot full! 😉
Blessings ~ Wendy
I was just showing to my husband and we both had memories of crashing through ice like this as children! Thanks Wendy!
