ruffed grouse

She hides her soul from prying,

pulls invisibility

close, feathered mantle shielding

vulnerable organs. Should

strangers breach her barriers,

happen suddenly upon

her inner sanctum, retreat

protocols dictate complete

withdrawal, complete shut-down.

.

So when she hears her Maker’s

footsteps in the garden, she

freezes, terrified, lest His

x-ray vision spy her here,

naked; not comprehending

a Love without boundaries

or condemnation, she hides.

This ruffed grouse didn’t understand that I meant her no harm, and beat a fast retreat. Is there a bond between her kind and mine, after all?

Looks like she may have an Indigo beak–I like that!

You would, you colour maven, you! 🙂

  3. Stephen Nielsen

How close were you able to get?

    1. melodylowes

About 8-10 meters? I was much closer at first but didn’t see her there at first. A good lesson in keeping my eyes open… 🙂

I think there are times when all of us would like to hide… so thankful that we can’t hide from God… His love & comfort is just what we need.

How true that is! Thanks for your words of wisdom, Daisy…

  5. Sissym

I’d love to get close to a bird and he will never hide from me!

    1. melodylowes

I would love that, too. Instinct seems to drive them away from us – how lovely it would be to cuddle right up with a little feathered friend! 😉 Thanks Sissy.

HOW did you snap that photo?? What a great shot! And I love the poem… “love without boundaries or condemnation.” Perfect.

🙂 I’m rather pleased that I got her, hiding as she was! Thanks so much…

What a lovely, real, tender poem. When our habit is to freeze and hide from others, we do sometimes even hide from the Maker’s footsteps.
    Beautiful.

Thank you Marilyn! We simply don’t understand His love, or we would run the other way…

  9. I HAVE A VOICE

Self protection is so human and nature instincts! How merciful Our Maker is to give all his creations with such sensitivity !

    1. melodylowes

I like that! Yes, He is sensitive to our needs and quirks…
