Pompous pines and smug cedars,

set aside superiority –

last night,

God released the Frost Fairies,

those celestial ladies-in-waiting

whose expertise is festal fashion;

today,

even the Ugly Ducklings

are Cinderellas,

even the weeds are winsome

in their fanciful finery.

The Great Equalizer,

frost paints all with the same brush –

seedling and signpost,

lilac and lantern,

thorn and thicket,

grass and grapevine;

 all are exquisitely,

royally dressed

for the Ball.

    Awesome, Melody.

      Thanks Peter!

    I love this, how do you get your inspiration? Just a curious bee!

      After 6 months of practice, I see ‘poems’ in the making in an intriguing image opportunity as I wander about my world with my camera. Sometimes the title or a phrase or two are already in my head as I snap, so I dart back in quickly to write before the inspiration leaves! Other times I use an idea I am chewing on in my own life and it develops as I look at a photo I am working on. I truly feel that this ‘thinking in poetry’ is a gift handed to me on a silver platter, so I strive to use it to encourage myself and others toward their best each day! Thank you Seyi for your visits… 🙂

        I just read about how we read to escape and we write to understand. 🙂 God bless you for our little escapes here each day, into your garden and God’s grace.

        That makes perfect sense to me – how fun to think about escaping to the garden! 🙂

    Love this one. Frost and alcoholism walk the same road. They are the great levellers.

      Hmmm – an interesting perception! We could by extension add several more – drugs, abuse, codependency, poverty… I hadn’t thought of it quite like that. But there is one more leveller in Jesus, and that is a lovely, lovely thought!

        In Christ we are reminded that we all share a common need for love, grace and forgiveness.

        ‘The Greatest Equalizer’! Amen.

    Both the poem and picture are absolutely beautiful! This reminds me of a time when we had begun landscaping around a rural home we’d just completed. Our place was a mess! Then it snowed and covered it all up… it was lovely and gave me hope that beauty would come. It eventually did.

      I like how our experiences teach us about life, as yours with the ‘great cover-up’ did! I wrote about something similar on my gardening blog last winter, about how mud and mess can be covered over, physically and metaphorically! Thanks Wendy!

        From scarlet to white as snow! 🙂

    Oooh, this is really nice, Melody!! I have one more autumn leaves poem coming up–and there’s a reference in it to Autumn’s ball gown, just so you’ll know I didn’t write it after reading yours! Though it plays havoc with drivers, etc, I think frost is one of nature’s most beautiful accessories–God’s diamonds and pearls, maybe… God bless you–love, Caddo

      Love Autumn’s ball gown – and frosty gowns rank high in there, too! 🙂 It’s hard not to think haute couture this time of year…

        I’m kind of smirking, as I began the fall poems with my “fan dancer” one–and hopefully gathered a bit more sophistication as the days danced on! But sometimes we just get in those “playful wink” moods, eh?

      2. melodylowes

        Indeed! *wink* I’ve got some of those coming up in the next few days…

      3. Caddo Veil

        Oh goody!!
